What is Step into Care?
Step into Care is a flexible online learning programme for people interested in working in adult social care.
The programme includes five short courses, and you can learn at your own pace, choose the courses that are most relevant to you or complete the full programme. You can also opt in to receive support as you move through the programme.
You are eligible for Step into Care if you:
- are aged 16 or over.
- live in Staffordshire or Stoke-on-Trent.
- are not already working in adult social care.
- have the right to live and work in the UK without restriction.
- are thinking about working in adult social care and want to learn more.
Getting started
Step into Care is due to commence in September 2026.
If you are interested, you can email StepIntoCare@staffordshire.gov.uk, and we will let you know when Step into Care is live.
What happens after Step into Care?
Step into Care can help you decide if working in care is right for you. When you finish, you can think about your next steps. These will be different for each person.
We will ask you how you want to move forward and signpost you to support in taking those next steps. For example:
- Apply for adult social care jobs if you feel ready.
- Tailored job search support – based on national / local job search platforms but filtered to suit your individual preferences.
- Job application / interview support - signposting to support available
- Employability Support Opportunities
- Learning Opportunities
- Accessing other relevant courses on the Social Care Academy
Next steps may also include deciding that adult social care is not the right option for you at that time.
Programme Details
The programme consists of the following five courses:
- Welcome to Adult Social Care - An introduction to adult social care, roles, values, safety, and working with others.
- Supporting Communication Needs - How to adapt communication and support people with different needs.
- Person-Centred Care - How to focus on what matters to the person receiving care.
- Strengths-Based Approach - How to support people to stay independent, confident, and in control.
- Adult Safeguarding - Keeping people safe. How to recognise abuse or neglect, manage risk, and report concerns.
A certificate is available after each course, and learners who complete all five courses can also download a Step into Care graduation certificate.
